Our Dance Programs

Creative Movement

These classes are designed specifically for pre-school children ages 3 & 4. The purpose of these classes is to develop basic motor skills, spatial awareness, rhythm, co-ordination and listening skills. As well, these classes help in building confidence and encourage children with their social interactions.

Children enrolling for Creative 3 must be 3 years of age by October 31st, 2019,

Children enrolling for Creative 4 must be 4 years of age by December 31st, 2019. No exemptions will be made.

Creative Movement

Ballet

Island Dance Academy is a registered school with The Royal Academy of Dance, RAD, The Canadian Dance Teachers Association, CDTA. IDA follows and teaches both syllabus. The RAD syllabus has been carefully structured beginning at the PRE-PRIMARY LEVEL for 5 years old, PRIMARY level for 6 and 7 year olds and continuing on from grades 1 thru 8. Students may also phase into the vocational levels following grade 5. Students are not only trained in classical ballet but free movement, pointe, traditional character within the structure of the ballet classes. 

The CDTA syllabus covers BALLET, JAZZ, and CONTEMPORARY 

Ballet

These classes are designed specifically for pre-school children ages 3 & 4. Jazz

Island Dance Academy has a customized Jazz curriculum specifically designed to compliment and enhance the RAD syllabus. Following this syllabus enables the students to progress through their dance training in planned stages which in turn enhances their technique in a controlled and buildable manner.

Jazz is offered to ages 6 and up and it is highly recommended that students take a ballet class as well to help with their technical development, flexibility and strength. 

Senior ITP Jazz technique is open to those students in the Senior ITP program.

Island Dance Academy also follows and teaches the CDTA, Canadian Dance Teachers Association, jazz syllabus. IDA is a registered school with the CDTA.

Jazz

Pointe

Pointe work is the result of slow and gradual training of the whole body into proper placement and strength. Students MUST be attending 2 ballet classes a week to participate in Pointe work, NO EXCEPTIONS. 

Contemporary

IDA’s Contemporary classes encourage expressive movement focusing on strong technique, floor work, lifts and flexibility while striving to connect the mind and body through movement.

Broadway

IDA’s Broadway classes introduce the students to a wide range of choreography from today and yesterdays film and theatre. Theses classes follow a curriculum featuring choreography from world renowned geniuses such as Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Gillian Lynne and Michael Bennett, just to name a few.

Broadway is offered to students in the Intermediate Jazz level and up. Students must be taking at least 1 jazz or ballet class to participate or by permission of instructor.

Pre Pointe

Pre pointe is offered to ballet students who are not yet on pointe to further develop and strengthen the muscles necessary to go en pointe. Pre pointe focuses on the correct alignment, classical ballet technique as well as build confidence. This class allows teachers to assess readiness, offering an atmosphere for proper evaluation of important skills.

Students are required to take 2 ballet classes a week to be eligible for this class.

Intensive Training Program

This program is designed for the dedicated and committed dancer who has a desire to reach higher levels of technique and performance. ITP classes are structured for the serious young dancers in Advanced and senior levels who are interested in challenging themselves in a concentrated and focused class environment. Dancers interested in the ITP program must be taking at least 2 ballet and 1 jazz class per term to qualify for ITP classes.
